BUJUMBURA, May 28 (ABP) – Burundi is experiencing a worrying pace in population growth; the Gatumba zone in the Mutimbuzi commune is no exception, a check on the site last Wednesday by ABP revealed.

Bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), there is observed debauchery leading to sexual vagabondage among some women of Gatumba who no longer feel any scruples about respecting the customs of this nation, said Joseph Mayoya, a resident of the Muyange I neighborhood.

According to him, these women, some of whom have multiple partners, indulge in debauchery for money to meet the needs of their families, he explained. Unfortunately, as Mayoya mentioned, their offspring, made up of adult girls, end up being drawn into “this ‘dirty trade,'” according to him.
“The Congolese are the main clients because they have dollars,” added Mayoya. He noted that this prostitution results in an increase in the population of the Gatumba locality, as some of these women end up pregnant.

For Mariam Ndikumana, another resident of Gatumba, the “irresponsible” behavior of these women affects their children who imitate them. To discourage this inappropriate behavior, the administration and police should get much more involved by organizing surprise visits to the guest houses, our sources suggested. They added that messages encouraging people to plan child births and adopt modern contraceptive methods should be promoted to better manage births.
