BUJUMBURA, December 31st (ABP) – The Geographical Institute of Burundi (IGEBU) is organizing a workshop for media professionals on the interpretation of weather forecasts and other climatic information, from December 26 to 27 in Bujumbura. The aim is to promote collaboration between IGEBU and the media, so that the latter can better understand and disseminate climatic information more effectively.

According to IGEBU technician Kayoya Ézéchiel, who gave a presentation on the early warning system, weather information is essential to the world’s economic development.     Natural phenomena caused by climate change have claimed many victims in several countries. In Burundi, several victims and the homeless have been recorded by the authorities.

He pointed out that that is due to the fact that the population is not well informed about the importance of weather information.  Weather forecasts are also essential for guaranteeing safety, agricultural productivity and all the economic activities of countries and the well-being of modern societies.

Turning to the role of the media, he pointed out that the media contribute to improving communication. He explained that the media play an important role in disseminating information to the public. By understanding and correctly interpreting weather forecasts, media professionals can convey accurate and useful information to communities.

He explained that by rapidly disseminating information, the media can quickly get crucial alerts and information to vulnerable populations, which can save lives in the event of natural disasters and health emergencies.

He did not forget to mention that the media also contribute to educating and raising awareness among populations, which helps to limit the loss of human life and property. In coordinating with the authorities, the media work closely with local and international authorities to ensure clear and effective communication.

When it comes to monitoring and evaluating early warning systems, they provide feedback and identify areas for improvement. With regard to universal access, the media can reach diverse audiences, including those in remote areas where access to information is limited.
