BUJUMBURA, September 20th (ABP) – Parents of children displaced from the Gatumba zone, in Mutimbuzi commune, Bujumbura province (western Burundi) currently settled at the Gisagara site, in Mubimbi commune, are calling for their children to have schools to continue their education. They say that when the site was set up, no thought was given to providing classrooms as is done in other countries.

With just a few days to go before the start of the new school year, some pupils have not been to school because the schools are far from the site.

An administrative source contacted by ABP on Wednesday, 18 September 2024, in Gisagara said that these pupils could be placed in nearby schools located some 3 kilometres away, in the Matyazo zone, for example.

Asked whether those children have school supplies, the provincial director of social affairs and family development, Adélaïde Hatangayo, said that the ministry in charge of solidarity had begun work on identifying beneficiaries, but that this work had been suspended by some displaced people, but that it would begin again shortly, in order to provide these pupils with exercise books, pens and other items.
