July 30 (AMSP/CGTN) – – China and the US have wrapped up two days of trade talks in Stockholm, agreeing to seek an extension of their 90-day tariff truce. While no breakthrough was announced, both sides called the talks constructive. Trade expert Professor Cui Fan says the dialogue went beyond tariffs to deeper macroeconomic issues—laying the foundation for cooperation, even as key differences remain. Li Shuang brings us more.

“Well, thanks for joining us, professor. The talks were described as ‘constructive’. How should we interpret the current dynamics of the negotiation?”

“The outcome of the talks was largely in line with market expectations. Building on the foundations laid during previous meetings in Geneva and London – where the Geneva Consensus and London Framework were established. This latest round expanded the scope of discussions significantly. In addition to traditional trade topics like tariffs and export controls, both sides exchanged views on broader issues, including macroeconomic policies. The dialogue was described as candid and in-depth, helping to lay the groundwork for future cooperation,” says Professor Cui.

“With the 90-day tariff truce possibly being extended, what kind of message does that send to global markets and supply chains?”

“This issue should be viewed from two angles. On one hand, neither China nor the United States wants to see the trade dispute escalate further. On the other hand, significant differences remain between the two sides—particularly on tariffs and broader trade issues. These differences are likely to persist for some time, and both parties will need to face them squarely while working to find common ground. From a market perspective, the overall trajectory of China-US trade relations appears to be stabilizing, but uncertainties remain. These uncertainties continue to disrupt global industrial and supply chains. Reducing that uncertainty should be a shared goal for both sides,” Professor Cui expresses his insights.
