NGOZI, December 13th (ABP) – On Tuesday, December 10, 2024, the NGO ACORD Burundi launched the distribution of rabbits to groups in the Mubuga and Bwizabweranka villages commune and province of Ngozi.
The distribution, part of the AID-I Accelerated Dissemination of Agricultural Innovations project, awarded 104 rabbits to the 13 groups, with 7 female rabbits and one male rabbit each.
As part of the solidarity chain, it is planned that each member household of the group will have at least 5 rabbits in the very near future.
Each targeted group will also have the task of creating two other groups, with its own multiplied rabbits.
The AID-I project coordinator, Dieudonné Nduwimana, insisted on the proper care of the rabbits, especially as the group members had already received training in that area.
He pointed out that, contrary to the widespread belief that rabbits are sickly, they do not die once properly fed and cared for. He advised them to feed them grasses that are not damp, to give them water and a little salt, and medicine if necessary.
The AID-I project proceeded with demonstrations by small packets so that the agro-breeders could go and do tests at home, drawing inspiration from the models in the demonstration fields.
The project is funded by USAID through the International Institute for Agricultural Technology (IITA), its implementing agency in the Great Lakes region.
The NGO ACORD Burundi is leading its implementation in the provinces of Ngozi, Cibitoke and Bubanza.
