BURURI, March 26th (ABP) – Some 121 cows have been identified in the communes of Bururi, Matana and Songa as showing symptoms of lumpy skin disease. According to data provided by Bururi BPEAE officials, 21 cows have been identified in Bururi commune, 22 in Matana commune, while 78 cows have been identified as suffering from lumpy skin disease in Songa commune. Gloriose Niyubahwe, Director of the Bururi Provincial Office for the Environment, Agriculture and Livestock, advises livestock farmers that once they notice symptoms such as high temperature, swelling of certain membranes, loss of appetite and the presence of nodules on the neck, they should contact the local and zonal veterinarians immediately.

She explained that lumpy skin disease is difficult to prevent, as it is transmitted by biting insects, and is different from foot-and-mouth disease, which attacks the hooves and mouth. She pointed out that the disease is viral, but explained that there is no specific treatment, rather the symptoms are treated with antibiotics to avoid secondary infections. However, she noted that the symptoms can be treated and cured.
