Chengdu’s Low-Altitude Aviation Sector Helps Improve Rural Medical Care

CHENGDU, February 27th (AMSP/CGTN) – – Chengdu is a key city in the development of the low-altitude economy in Southwest China’s Sichuan Province. Tourists now have the opportunity to fly tourist planes as they overlook the city, while U-A-Vs carry medical equipment between urban and rural hospitals.

Chengdu’s Chongzhou is a go-to place for fans of aviation sports, amid a flourishing low-altitude industry.

The Haoyun general aviation aerodrome is the biggest base for aviation sports in southwest China. Tourists here skydive, study for a UAV license, and fly small planes to overlook the city with the help of instructors.

Over one-hundred-thousand tourist trips were made here in 2024, usually on weekends or holidays, with thirty-thousand flying the aircraft. Paying less than four hundred yuan, or about 55 US dollars, the flight lasts for ten minutes.

“…I was scared to death… because there was turbulence…For people like me who have acrophobia, the heights make me dizzy…but for most people, I think it’s a great experience,” CGTN’s Zheng Songwu expressed his insight.

Official data shows Chengdu has over five hundred aerospace enterprises, and its industrial scale has exceeded 150-billion yuan, or over two million US dollars.

“The governments of Chongzhou, Chengdu, and Sichuan have all supported us much. For instance, they helped build wider nearby roads for us, and they also offered guidance and support to improve equipment in our aerodrome,” said Lu Tao, General Manager of Sichuan Haoyun General Aviation Company.

It took medical staff one day to transport medical test materials from the rural Shanquan Township Hospital to Longquanyi number one hospital in Chengdu’s Longquanyi District.

Last year, the local government worked with a tech company from Hangzhou, using UAVs to transport the materials. The journey now takes less than 15 minutes. The UAV flies every day from the Chengdu hospital, leaving at 10 a.m. and bringing the materials back before eleven, so doctors can share the results online.

“Due to the operation of the UAV fly line, the materials from our hospital can be tested on the same day. It only takes about eleven minutes to transport. So our patients can come to us on the same day,” Yan Ciling, Director, Shanquan Township Hospital told CGTN.

Enterprises and Chengdu officials have signed nearly fifty major projects in the low-altitude economy and commercial space sector in February, marking another milestone for the industries in Chengdu.
