Houses dislodged and fields damaged by rain and strong winds

RUTANA, February 27th (ABP) – In the afternoon of Tuesday 25 February 2025, violent weather hit the villages of Gitanga and Kazeba, in the commune of Gitanga, in the province of Rutana.

According to the commune’s administrator, Onésime Nkengurutse, rain accompanied by strong winds toppled 19 houses and damaged a pre-school training facility set up by FVS Amis des Enfants, as well as a classroom. The Burundi Savings and Credit Cooperative (COOPEC) also suffered damage to one of its buildings. Four houses used for trading were also affected. Unharvested maize fields were also severely affected.  In view of the damage, Nkengurutse appealed for solidarity between the victims and their neighbours.
