BUJUMBURA, June 2 (ABP) – They swim in disorder at the outlet of the rice irrigation dam at Rukaramu, not far from National Road No. 5 (Bujumbura-Cibitoke). These are young children from the surrounding area, a check on May 28, 2025 by ABP has revealed.

Innocently, the toddlers aged between 5 and 10 swim without any concern, taking turns in a game they are used to, which is noticeable at first glance.

Considering the environment and the dirty water in which they dive, these children risk contracting all kinds of diseases; they could drown since there is no one to supervise them. Passersby and parents do not worry about their fate.

One parent, named Jacques Niyoyitungira, told the check by ABP that those children deceive the vigilance of the educators at Rukaramu basic school and their own parents to go swim in this dam water. Accidents could happen, he noted, thanking the Almighty who still watches over them.

When contacted, the administrator of Mutimbuzi commune, Siméon Butoyi, said he was unaware that this was happening and promised to discourage these youth through their parents.
