GITEGA/BURUNGA, July 7th (ABP) – The incoming governors of Gitega and Burunga provinces held handover ceremonies on Friday, July 4, 2025, amid them and the outgoing governors of the various administrative entities that make up the two provinces.
In Gitega province, the incoming governor of the province (central part of the country), composed of the former provinces of Mwaro, Muramvya, Gitega, and Karusi, Mr. Liboire Bigirimana, promised to be actively involved in leading the administrative entity on the path to development. He made those remarks on Friday, July 4, 2025, in his new office, following the reception of working documents from the outgoing governors of the four former provinces mentioned above. Governor Bigirimana expressed confidence that, together with the natives, friends of the province, and the population, his development aspirations will become a reality, specifying, however, that he will build on the foundations laid by his predecessors.
Reflecting on his strategies for advancing the development of the political capital located in Gitega province, Governor Bigirimana first acknowledged the solid foundations laid for building that city.
However, he also identified challenges, such as insufficient public and social infrastructure, improved roads, and insufficient water and electricity. He expressed hope for his contribution to changing the image of the city, specifying that this will be done in close collaboration with stakeholders in provincial development.
The handover operation was overseen by a delegate of the Minister of the Interior, Community Development, and Public Security, Major General of Police Isidore Ndihokubwayo, Inspector General of the said ministry. He recommended that the incoming governor scrupulously follow the recommendations that the President of the Republic of Burundi, Mr. Evariste Ndayishimiye, issued to the country’s senior officials and executives during his recent moralizing session. These recommendations are aimed at the success of the Burundian government’s vision of an emerging Burundi by 2040 and a developed one by 2060, he emphasized. Previously, the four outgoing governors had, in turn, submitted to the incoming governor files containing the status of the former provinces that were under their responsibility. These files essentially detailed movable and immovable property, rolling stock, as well as projects currently underway or planned.
In Burunga Province, the handover ceremonies between the Governor of Burunga Province, Mr. Parfait Mboninyibuka, and the outgoing governors of the former provinces of Bururi, Makamba, Rumonge, and Rutana took place in the presence of the Permanent Secretary for the Interior and Development, Mr. Théophile Ndarufatiye, who represented the Ministry in charge of the Interior at the ceremonies.
He asked the Governor of Burunga Province and the outgoing governors to remain united for the development of their province. He also asked the incoming governor to be a good father by coordinating all the province’s activities.
Mr. Mboninyibuka indicated that he comes with hope because a step forward has been made in terms of development. He noted that he will complete the work currently underway and initiate development projects of general interest together with the natives of Burunga Province. The former governor of the former Makamba province, Mrs. Tantine Ncutinamagara, asked the new governor to continue strengthening good neighborly relations between the province and Tanzania, so that the people of the sub-region remain in harmony.
The outgoing governors promised that they are ready to brief the new governor of Burunga province on the strategies they used to advance the entities that make up Burunga province.
