BUJUMBURA, June 3 (ABP) – Rabbit breeders in the expanded commune of Ntahangwa are lamenting the lack of a market to sell their products, a check on site by ABP revealed on Monday, June 2, 2025, during a field visit.
According to Alexis Ndayizeye, representative of the association “Urunani rw’aborozi b’inkwavu,” based in the Kinama zone, Bubanza neighborhood, the number of rabbits is increasing day by day. To avoid inbreeding and overcrowding, he believes there should be a market to sell the excess rabbits. This would promote healthy growth among the remaining animals and provide funds for food and veterinary care.
Gisèle Ntirampeba, another breeder from Cibitoke neighborhood in Bujumbura city, stated that the lack of a market is one of the major challenges in rabbit farming. Although she owns a significant stock of 100 rabbits, she struggles to find potential buyers. She told ABP that many people consider her prices too high.
This situation does not discourage her; however, as she emphasized that she has invested a substantial amount of money in the venture.
The representative of the “Urunani rw’aborozi b’inkwavu” association is calling on the government to establish a rabbit sales market to allow breeders to earn returns on their investment.
