Towards the promotion of pig farming

BUBANZA, December 17th (ABP) – Members of pig farming cooperatives in Bubanza province (North-West Burundi) are called upon to promote and improve this farming, as a means of transforming it into a business, up to export and the entry of foreign currency into the country. This was disclosed on Thursday, December 12, 2024, during the meeting that the leader of the provincial pig farming federation, Liévin Justin Yaramba. The meeting was held for representatives of pig farmers, with a view to exchanging on good practices to improve the farming.

During the meeting, it was mentioned that in Bubanza province, there are 80 pig farming cooperatives, made up of more than 11,000 members, with more than 85,000 pigs raised. Some of the farmers that a check by ABP contacted, said that their choice for pig farming was motivated by the fact that pigs multiply quickly, that they provide quality manure for crops, and that they valorize household waste, but also, they say, a well-maintained pig can be sold between BIF 500,000 and 2 million.

Nevertheless, they say they encounter a lack of techniques and knowledge in this type of farming. The leader of the provincial pig farming federation promised them that he will work to build their capacities, free of charge, in his piggery of more than 2,000 animals. He asked them to improve pig farming.

It is worth noting that the goal of the provincial federation is to reach one million pigs in Bubanza province.
