BURURI, July 15 (ABP) – Seventeen people were bitten by rabid dogs in the villages of Kiremba and Nyavyamo, in the commune of Bururi, on Wednesday. All of them were taken to Bururi hospital for partial treatment. Only ten of them received the vaccine.
The others were sent to purchase it elsewhere, as no vaccine was available in the health districts of Bururi, Matana, and Rutovu.
The families of the bitten victims are worried about the cost of treatment. One vaccine costs 58,900 BIF, and the patient must be vaccinated five times. Many families do not have the financial means to afford this.
At the administrative level, Ferdinand Nduwimana, the executive secretary of the Bururi commune urged the population to have all dogs vaccinated without exception. He also recommended chaining the dogs at home and killing any rabid dogs roaming across the streets.
