The President of the Republic addresses political party leaders

GITEGA, November 12th (ABP) – Burundi’s Head of State, Evariste Ndayishimiye, has warned that the success of the government’s vision of a country emerging in 2040 and developed in 2060 will depend on a spirit of patriotism, leadership from those in charge of services at all levels of national life, discipline and a well-developed program of activities.

He made that point during a morality session he led for political party leaders and young people affiliated to those political formations, on Thursday November 7, 2024, on the premises of the Polytechnic University of Gitega (in the Center of the country).

Drawing on the findings of the State’s civil service, President Ndayishimiye identified a number of constraints that could hinder the successful implementation of that vision. Those include injustice, corruption, misappropriation of public funds and disobedience.

He issued recommendations to participants to prevent them from falling into such degrading behaviour.

View of the participants

To the leaders of political parties, he asked them not to consider power as a source of wealth. Rather, he winked, “you must earn by the sweat of your brow”, before adding that they must set an example for society.

President Ndayishimiye also called on political party leaders to promote probity, impartiality and good governance.

To young people, the Head of State sharpened their sense of patriotism, fiercely opposing the detractors of peace and security, the predators of State property. He asked them to break with idleness and instead develop a strong sense of entrepreneurship to get out of unemployment. He also asked them to learn from their political elders about the proper way to manage the city.

Previously, speakers had addressed the theme: “Contribution of political parties to the implementation of the government’s vision, a country emerging in 2040 and developed in 2060”. Among the speakers was Jean de Dieu Mutabazi, who represented the leaders of the political parties. He pinpointed the main challenges in various sectors of national life, and put forward proposals that could contribute to the success of the government’s vision.

The former Head of State of Burundi, Sylvestre Ntibantunganya, invited young people to avoid falling into political manipulation so as not to harm the State, as has been the case in the past, he recalled. He called on politicians to offer young people a place in state institutions, so as to familiarize them with the running of the country.

At the end of the presentations, participants asked questions to which satisfactory answers were given.
