GITEGA, November 14th (ABP) – At the invitation of the President of the Republic of Burundi, Evariste Ndayishimiye, Burundi’s senators met in an extraordinary assembly on Monday, November 11, 2024, to approve the nominations for appointment to the courts, tribunals and prosecutor’s offices of the Republic of Burundi.
President Ndayishimiye had sent the Minister of Justice, Domine Banyankimbona, to present those appointments to the senators and enlighten them on the reasons behind their choice.
From the outset, Minister Banyankimbona specified that integrity, professionalism and the ethnic dimension were among the criteria put forward.
In the Supreme Court, Gamaliel Nkurunziza, from the Tutsi ethnic group, was approved to replace Emmanuel Gateretse. He received 38 votes out of 39.
As for the High Courts (TGI), nine jurisdictions were nominated for appointment. Those include Bubanza, Karuzi, Kayanza, Muyinga, Mwaro, Ntahangwa, Ruyigi, Kirundo and Gitega.
With regard to the public prosecutors’ offices attached to the appeal courts, the jurisdictions concerned were Makamba and Ntahangwa.
Six public prosecutor’s offices were approved. Those include Mukaza, Muyinga, Rutana, Makamba, Muha and Rumonge.
The President of the Senate, Emmanuel Sinzohagera, who chaired the session, congratulated the Burundian Head of State on that initiative to replace officials in the courts, tribunals and prosecutor’s offices. He pointed out that some of those had been characterized by abuses of power.
In their turn, the senators elected in the Bururi constituency pleaded for the inspection of those in charge of the judicial province of that administrative entity.
