Training young people to collect plastic waste and clean gutters

BUJUMBURA, March 26th (ABP) – On Saturday 22 March 2025, young people from the Buyenzi district and zone in the extended commune of Mukaza carried out community work in that zone. The work consisted of collecting plastic waste and cleaning gutters, with a view to protecting the environment and public health.

Buyenzi zone manager Seifu Niyonkuru, who was present at the community work, said that the aim of the initiative was to reduce and avoid water blockages and pollution of public spaces, prevent the risk of flooding, ensure a clean environment and maintain a healthy urban ecosystem.

In his view, that is an essential step towards a clean and well-maintained city. “Plastic pollution is a major threat to biodiversity, the oceans and even human health. He pointed out that that activity is not just for young people, but for everyone, with the aim of protecting the environment and keeping the city clean.

When rubbish is scattered in the gutters,” he added, “it causes problems for waste management and water drainage.  To that end, it is important to reduce plastic waste and keep the gutters clean to avoid flooding, using the installation of waste collection bins, clean-up campaigns and better municipal waste management as solutions.

Niyonkuru ended his speech by saying that cleanliness should be a daily task. He asked the heads of neighborhoods and households to mobilize others to clean the gutters around their houses and other buildings, in order to preserve health.

After those activities to collect plastic waste and clean the gutters, they planted tree seedlings, as part of the creation of healthy and pleasant spaces.ABP/Denis NTIHINDAGIZWA
