RUMONGE, February 27th (ABP) – The price of palm oil has risen significantly over the past four months in various sales outlets in Rumonge province, a check on the site by ABP has revealed.

A small 5l can, which used to cost 20,000 BIF, now costs 37,000 BIF. 1.5l, which used to cost 7,000 BIF, now costs 12,000 BIF.

Consumers who use this product on a daily basis do not understand the reason for this rise, at a time when Rumonge province is the leading producer of this oil palm crop.

It would be better for the state to regulate the price of palm oil, as it does for other products, say consumers, fearing speculation on this product.

The traders contacted said that the rise in the price of palm oil depended on the purchase price, citing the price of 25 litres of palm oil, which four months ago cost between 130,000 BIF and 180,000 BIF, but now costs between 180,000 BIF and 210,000 BIF. Those traders have joined consumers in calling on the government to regulate the price of palm oil.
