BUJUMBURA/NTAHANGWA, July 8 (ABP) – The Umuco w’Aborozi association, based in the Kinama zone, has taken the initiative to make clay pots to use as feeders and waterers for rabbits. This initiative aims to improve the animals’ nutrition and hydration, a check on site on Friday, July 4, 2025 by ABP has revealed.

According to Alexis Ndayizeye, a member of the association, modern rabbit farming involves separating the animals, each in its own cage, equipped with the appropriate accessories to ensure their good health. Previously, he explained, the association used plastic bowls as feeders and waterers. However, these containers were easily knocked over by the rabbits, which soiled the cages with urine, which automatically became unusable and unsaleable. It was with this in mind that the idea of making clay pots emerged. Unlike plastic, he says, these pots are heavier and therefore more stable, reducing the risk of water or food spilling. Ndayizeye also explained that rabbits tend to gnaw plastic bowls, which quickly renders them unusable. In addition to wearing out easily, these materials are difficult to clean, thus promoting the spread of disease in the animals. He also points out that handcrafting clay pots has allowed the association not only to improve hygiene on the farms, but also to generate income. These pots are sold to other rabbit farmers in Kinama and other surrounding areas.

Through this activity, the association’s members can obtain food for the rabbits, ensure their health, and meet other livestock-related needs. Ndayizeye calls on other rabbit farmers to also start complementary small businesses to make their farming more sustainable and profitable, without relying exclusively on external resources.
