KARUSI, October 1st (ABP) – The school province of Karusi celebrated on Friday, September 27, 2024, the Day dedicated to education, a day celebrated every year since 2020. This year, the celebration was special because it coincided with the occupation of first place in the national contest for ten consecutive years, announced the Provincial Director of Education, Mr. Ferdinand Havyarimana.
On that occasion, Father Wilson Nkurunziza, priest of the Sacré Cœur parish of Karusi, recalled the role of a good shepherd to show the relationship between students, teacher, teacher director and director-administration.
Deploring the worrying number of school dropout cases, Father Wilson Nkurunziza hopes that the synergy of parents, teachers, village leaders and basic ecclesiastical communities can solve the problem.
The Civil Chief of Staff in the Office of the President, Brigadier General Aloys Sindayihebura, the Assistant Minister of National Education and Scientific Research, the provincial governor, the DPE Gitega and his delegation who came to inquire about experience, and other personalities, congratulated the DPE Karusi, which did everything to jealously keep the first place.
According to the DPE Karusi, taking this place is not a haphazard, but the result of hard work, he noted. The province was ranked 17th in 2017, 16th in 2018, 12th in 2011, 6th in 2012, and 5th in 2013 and first since 2014 until today, the DPE explained. He revealed that the strategies used include regular pedagogical and administrative supervision meetings, meetings with teachers for professional awareness, the organization of pedagogical days of reinforcement on methodological approaches, compulsory and supervised morning study established among learners, strengthening the competitive spirit, analysis of the results of training tests organized in networks, in districts and at the provincial level as well as the slogan “sensitivity to honor and shame” which has become a guiding principle. The school province has certainly been successful but is not lacking in challenges, he announced. That the province still has 8.6% of school dropout cases, which is a tragedy that must be dealt with in order to achieve the slogan: “zero school dropouts”, he expresses his hope.
The inadequacy of infrastructure, equipment and staff remains a common challenge to all DPEs even if the government is doing everything possible.
He thanked the partners, in particular the association of natives, the administration and particularly the NGO World Vision. The chairperson of the association, ENDESKA, “Together for the Socio-Economic Development of Karusi” also spoke about the program it has set for itself, namely “a native, a school bench” and the project to purchase mattresses for boarding schools.
The day ended with the presentation of awards to brilliant students and successful teachers as well as the sharing of drinks.
