CIBITOKE, May 28 (ABP) – A good harvest is expected in Cibitoke province for the 2025 agricultural season B, according to Edmond Uwobikundiye, head of production, plant protection, and human food at the Provincial Office for Environment, Agriculture, and Livestock (BPEAE) in Cibitoke.

Although the harvest for the 2025 Season B is not yet complete, promising maize yields, for example, are already on the horizon. Uwobikundiye attributes this success to three main factors, the first being strict adherence to the agricultural calendar by farmers who now understand the importance of planting early to harvest early.

He also emphasized the role of high-quality hybrid maize seeds, distributed to farmers by the government, as another key factor in the positive outlook for this season.

The third contributing factor he mentioned is the use of FOMI fertilizers combined with organic manure, which significantly improved yields not only during Agricultural Season A 2025 but also for those who managed to obtain them again for Season B.

Uwobikundiye noted a similar trend for rice production, supported by seeds provided by government partners such as Enabel.

Regarding challenges faced during Agricultural Season B 2025, he pointed out issues with the supply of “Urea” fertilizer. Many farmers placed orders but have yet to receive this fertilizer intended for the season. On the black market, some traders are selling a 50-kilogram sack of Urea for prices ranging between 200,000 and 250,000 BIF, while the subsidized price is 66,000 BIF, he lamented.

He appealed for timely delivery of these fertilizers to farmers and urged them to continue following the agricultural calendar, which also facilitates better technical supervision.
