BUJUMBURA, October 24th (ABP) –Torrential rain mixed with strong wind that occurred at the night of October 21 to 22, 2024, left three people injured and another traumatized, 169 shelters completely destroyed, 379 others partially affected, and household goods damaged. It was at the Gisagara site, in Mubimbi district, Bujumbura province (West), which shelters displaced people from the Gatumba County.
According to the Burundi Red Cross, which dispatched a team there to assess the damage from that storm, the humanitarian situation requires urgent and rapid intervention to alleviate the suffering of victims in incredible distress. In addition to the damage reported, blocks of latrines are either damaged; others are out of order while the four lighting systems were struck by lightning.
The affected households are in urgent need of food and non-food items, school supplies, sanitizers, and the reconstruction of 169 shelters that were completely destroyed. There is also an urgent need to rehabilitate 379 other shelters that are partially damaged, rebuild latrines and empty the others.
