BUJUMBURA, March 12th (ABP) – Sewing is a profitable, rewarding, and promising profession for young Burundians, offering both economic opportunities and a means of creative expression, said a young graduate of the University of Burundi, Diomède Mugisha, living in Kamenge zone, Ntahangwa commune in Bujumbura City Council. Mugisha said that a year after his university studies, he met a friend who hadn’t had the chance to finish his studies but was skilled in the sewing trade. This is how he was inspired to practice this profession and joined him. According to him, no profession is small; you just have to be proud of it.
So he completed six months of training, which he graduated from with expertise. “The beginning of the entrepreneurial journey wasn’t easy, he said, revealing that Simone de Beauvoir’s quote, ‘the present is not a potential past; it is a moment for choice and action’, kept him going ahead.
With limited resources at their disposal, and thanks to this inspiration, they were still able to purchase a machine to begin the project. “Thanks to this business, we are currently able to pay the rent, meet our daily needs, and have been able to purchase a second machine to continue our work,” he said.
The major challenges, according to him, remain access to basic equipment, visibility, competition, and the disloyalty of some customers.
The young Mugisha calls on other young people, especially those graduating from university, to pursue income-generating/ entrepreneurial activities because, he said, entrepreneurship is the pillar of self-development.
