BUJUMBURA, January 15th (ABP) – Young people from the Gahahe neighborhood, Ntahangwa district in Bujumbura City have come together to raise chickens, with a view to eradicating poverty. This was announced by Queen Mugisha, one of the young people carrying out this project, during an interview with a check by ABP on Monday, January 13, 2025.

Mugisha said that the beginning was not easy because, she said, without experience in this field, they encountered problems. “One by one the chicks died, which sowed despair to continue the project,” she said. However, she said that they did not give up; they resorted to a veterinarian.

She was pleased that the veterinarian’s intervention saved the poultry farming and allowed their project to evolve. She advised others, without experience, who would like to embark on the project, to first consult a veterinarian to explain to them all the animal health-related issues. “In case of illness, know how to treat these animals by using appropriate methods and medications,” she advised. For her, with good animal health, chickens multiply quickly.

She specified that these young people have undertaken, in parallel, rabbit farming, in order to balance prices following the increase in meat prices, on the one hand. “Rabbit farming is presented as a solution to the scarcity of beef, and others due to the increase in prices observed in recent years,” she specified.

On the other hand, Mugisha disclosed that income increases and allows them to meet their needs. She asked the government of Burundi to provide material support to young people who are active and to encourage other young people to work and get rid of dawdling and passivity that is observed among some young people.
