BEIJING, March 10th (AMSP/CGTN) – – At this year’s two sessions, the growth of the private economy continues to be a key focus area. CGNT’s Xu Yi sat down with Dr. Henry Tan, a business leader from Hong Kong and a Member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference to discuss the highlights of his proposal and the development of private firms based in China’s Greater Bay Area.
“This year marks your 8th consecutive attendance at the Two Sessions. Could you elaborate on the key proposals you are submitting this year?,” Xu Yi asked.
“In December last year, the Government has submitted and proposed amendment to the Chinese fishing law. We would like to see the Hong Kong and Macao is included in the whole overall administration and functioning of the Chinese fishing law. And they will hopefully enable Hong Kong and Macao residents to be able to fish overseas.
I also noticed that in the fishing laws also encouraging farming, and right now, China is already the biggest fish farming nation in the world. In fact, people from Hong Kong have a lot of experience in southeast Asia country, in ASEAN. And recently, last year, when the Indonesian president come to visit China, and he also suggested that Chinese fishing fleet may be going to help them with the fishing industry. I think Hong Kong fishermen can also participate in this situation. We are also working on the use of technology, like in the recent months. Hong Kong productivity council is working on the EM system with the fishing boats, such that we’ll be able to monitor the fishing boats they catch and the behavior which will encourage safety of the fisherman. So we were looking at different areas, and we are also trying to bring back the deep sea fish, which is not polluted, which go down to 300 meters deep to your kitchen, to your restaurants,” Dr. Henry Tan replied.
“Luen Thai Group has pioneered fashion branding, particularly in footwear/apparel. With rising trends like Guochao (national chic) and new Chinese-style aesthetics reinvigorating domestic brands. What unique advantages position Hong Kong as an international fashion capital?,” Xu Yi asked.
“Well, as many people probably know, Hong Kong is very international. We are also a very big manufacturing city for textile garments, since the 1960s. I believe that Hong Kong should move from manufacturing to management of textile production and maybe to branding and distribution. So last November, we had Hong Kong fashion show, which is very successful. Almost 20 nations have come to participate, and we are very happy that one of the Cambodian designers participated and was able to sell some products during the fashion show, and she’s so happy that she even moved to Hong Kong to grow her business. We are trying to promote Hong Kong to become an international fashion center that we would like to bring. We want to develop, we want to grow the groom, the Hong Kong young designers. We also like to have a Chinese mainland especially TP as designers and Asian and maybe even foreign designer to move to Hong Kong. We are trying to see Hong Kong become a fashion center,” Dr. Henry Tan replied told CGTN’s Xu Yi.
“As an entrepreneur from Hong Kong, how do you assess the current business ecosystem and developmental milestones for GBA-based private enterprises?,” Xu Yi put one more question to Dr. Henry Tan.
“We are very happy to see the result of the meeting of President Xi with those high tech entrepreneurs, about a couple of weeks ago. We are very encouraged. We also understand that like private enterprise promotion bill, this currently in the National People’s Congress. We probably have the highest percentage of private business. So those are all very encouraged with all the laws and all the regulation properly passed and written. We feel very strongly happy that the country will be more open than ever before. We are all looking to see that we will be having a very good 2025 and beyond,” Dr. Henry said.
