BUJUMBURA, January 21st (ABP) – The impact of films or cinema on the behavior of young people can be observed in both positive and negative aspects. This was stated by Josette Kankindi, a ‘psychologue sans vacances’ working at Rohero 2, boulevard de l’Indépendance in down-city Bujumbura, during an interview she gave to a check by ABP on Friday, January 17, 2025.

Mrs. Kankindi said that cinema exposes young people to various cultures, traditions and ways of life around the world, promoting a better understanding and acceptance of differences.

In addition, educational films and documentaries arouse curiosity and enhance learning by presenting historical events, scientific concepts and social issues.

If films present positive characters, they serve as role models for young people by encouraging them to pursue their dreams and develop important values. Thus, they can stimulate creativity and inspire young people to explore art, writing and filmmaking.

Furthermore, she said that the negative impact of films on young people is not lacking. There are films that incite adolescents to abuse psychoactive substances, others abuse norms and culture, and thus leading to “harmful behaviors,” she said.

Kankindi explained that harmful or aggressive behaviors in films can destabilize young people in the face of real-world violence and influence their behavior. He underscored that negative or ambiguous characters in films can normalize harmful behaviors such as drug addiction, bullying and criminal activities.

She advised parents to play a crucial role in helping young people understand the difference between reality and fiction, guiding them in choosing informed films. In addition, parents must engage in open conversations about films and their impact that can foster a deeper understanding of the messages conveyed and their potential effects.

She called on parents, educators and society as a whole to help ensure that young people are better equipped to make informed decisions and lead balanced lives in a film-driven world.
