BUJUMBURA, December 12th (ABP) – On Wednesday, December 11, 2024, Burundi’s Prime Minister, Gervais Ndirakobuca, hosted the 9th Congress of the Burundi Professional Accountants’ Association in Bujumbura. Apart from Burundi, that congress brought together professional accountants from the countries of the sub-region: Somalia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda, to exchange views on the quality of financial information produced, and on the state of the accounting profession at regional level.

The theme of the congress was “Digital transformation and standardization of the accounting profession in Burundi: keys to the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC)”.

Burundi’s Prime Minister noted that the country needs an appropriate financial information system to govern well, adding that transparency will ensure that Burundi’s vision and the objectives of the national development plan are achieved. He therefore called on professional accountants to play their part to the full.

Ndirakobuca also indicated that that congress was a good opportunity to exchange views on the quality of the financial information produced and on the current state of the accounting profession.

Frédéric Gahungu, President of the Professional Accountants Association of Burundi, revealed that IFAC brings together all the associations that have applied for membership and meet the required conditions.

To be a member, he explained, you need to be a chartered accountant, with a diploma recognized by that institution, and to know and master international standards on private and public accounting, as well as auditing and sustainability standards. Gahungu outlined the advantages of membership of that institution, namely: access to financing, and immediate access to the institution’s recent publications. He also pointed out that Burundi joined IFAC on November 6, 2024.
