CANKUZO, December 24th (ABP) – The chairman of the technical committee of the Ewe Burundi urambaye programme, Major General Ignace Sibomana, launched the 2024/2025 tree-growing year under the Ewe Burundi urambaye programme. It was Saturday, December 21, 2024 on Muhweza hill in Cankuzo commune and province, a check on the site by ABP has revealed.

Sibomana recalled that the environment is the source of life because trees produce oxygen.

In addition, trees slow down erosion and promote the formation of water tables that supply wells and drinking water sources, reason why covering the ground with trees is necessary, he added.

Although quite a few trees have already been planted under this programme, Sibomana criticized the existence of bush fires that destroyed some trees planted under the said programme made possible by the government’s money through taxes and duties, not to mention the energy provided. He called on the entire population to rather preserve the environment instead of destroying it. It is worth noting that under this programme, fruit trees will also be grown along the roadsides, including 9,000 jackfruit trees in Cankuzo province and 20,000 in Ruyigi.
