BUJUMBURA, March 20th (ABP) – Traditional medicines are one of the solutions for human health. This was announced by Sister Pélagie Miburo, who works at the natural medicine sales center at the Bene Thérèse Sisters Health Center in Bujumbura City Council, during an interview she gave to a check by ABP on Tuesday, March 18, 2025.
According to Sister Miburo, traditional medicines are processed from natural plants found on the earth, that is, edible or non-edible plants. For her, natural medicine is the tradition of the grandfathers. She indicated that traditional medicines are the only plants in the world capable of protecting human health. Miburo pointed out that traditional medicines do not cause any consequences for human health, so the patient must follow the prescription. Moreover, these medicines are prepared under the best conditions with great hygiene.
Referring to the book of the prophet Ezekiel 47, verse 12 which states that “the fruits shall be food and the leaves shall be medicine,” Sister Miburo stated that every plant is a medicine for a human being. Felix Nikobamye, one of the patients that the check by ABP met at this center, announced that he chose traditional medicines because they are different from modern medicines. For him, pharmaceutical drugs are made from plants mixed with chemicals, which can be harmful to health.
Sister Miburo believes that traditional medicine is not bewitching or exorcistic, as some churches claim, which even forbid their followers from using it. Instead, she called for a change in behavior, believing that this medicine is as effective as modern medicine and is neither bewitching nor exorcistic. Sister Miburo asked the State to support traditional medicine, which, according to her, was practiced in Burundi long before modern medicine came.
