MUYINGA, February 20th (ABP) – The torrential rains that fell in the villages of the Gasorwe commune have seriously threatened crops, households and the lives of the inhabitants of the locality, a check on the site on Monday, February 17, 2025 by ABP has revealed.
The rains mixed with hail and strong winds ravaged the fields whose crops were not yet harvested, such as corn, beans, banana trees and cassava on the hills such as Gasuru, Kigoganya, Kiremba, Kiryama, Martyazo and Gishuha.
It is worthy to mention that several households were destroyed by the winds. These torrential rains fell on February 16 and 17, 2025, as confirmed by Dieudonné Niyonizigiye, administrator of the Gasorwe commune.
Niyonizigiye added that the village leaders are currently collecting data in order to assess the damage.
According to some people met in those villages, although the rains were light at first, it was the winds and hail that accompanied them that caused damage, uprooting and carrying away many crops.
In some families, everything was wet, even the bedroom. As a result, school materials such as notebooks were destroyed, forcing students not to go to school. In addition to the houses destroyed and fruit trees uprooted by these winds, some people were injured by debris from the houses that were carried away.
Note that remnants of hail were still visible the day after in some places on those villages, while the value of the damage has not yet been assessed.
