KIRUNDO, February 14th (ABP) – The Burundian Head of State, Evariste Ndayishimiye, accompanied by the First Lady of Burundi Angeline Ndayishimiye, went, on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, to Bugabira commune, Kirundo province (north) to provide assistance to households that have not harvested due to the water deficit, a check by ABP revealed.
A total of 11,266 households were affected by this weather uncertainty in Bugabira commune, 10,412 in Busoni commune and 558 households in Kirundo commune.
Some 168,990 tonnes of maize and 56,330 tonnes of rice were granted by the President of the Republic to those victims from Bugabira commune. The First Lady, for her part, distributed “Tende”, made from oil palm dates.
The Governor of Kirundo Province, Victor Segasago, through his welcoming speech, indicated that to deal with climate change, the province has seen fit to promote the development of swamps and hill irrigation.
He also said that there are hill irrigation infrastructures built with great resources but which do not work. He indicated that plans are being made to see how to proceed with the repair, and that the monitoring team has already been set up.
The President of the Republic asked the population of Kirundo Province to consolidate the culture of local solidarity to support those who are in a deplorable situation including those victims of weather variation.
After noting the embezzlement of resources allocated to projects responsible for hill irrigation in Kirundo province, the Head of State indicated that he will soon launch an investigation to identify the promoters of the failure so that they can be punished.
The Head of State invited representatives of religious denominations to pray with him for Kirundo province, so that it is spared from evil, and that it becomes prosperous again.
