KIRUNDO, March 26th (ABP) – The six communes of Kirundo province in northern Burundi – Kirundo, Vumbi, Ntega, Gitobe, Bugabira, and Busoni – jointly commemorated International Women’s Day on Saturday, March 22, 2025. The Governor’s Chief of Staff Eric Nduwayezu joined the people of Vumbi commune to represent the provincial administration.
The representative of the women’s forum in Vumbi commune, Patricie Harerimana, pointed out that the women of that commune are well supported and that they are contributing to the development of the country by projecting towards the vision of the country 2040-2060. Harerimana also announced that the women of the Vumbi commune are preparing accordingly for the forthcoming elections. She hopes that they will be well represented in the decision-making bodies.
The local administrator of Vumbi, Jennifer Kankindi, pointed out that that day dedicated to women was taking place at a time when violence against women was still taking place. She called on all partners to help eradicate that violence.
As for the Governor’s Chief of Staff, he called for the perpetrators of violence against women to be prosecuted and punished through flagrante delicto trials. He urged the women to stick together for the development of their commune.
To mark the occasion, the Vumbi local authority provided assistance in the form of beans, maize, loincloths and soap to 54 destitute women from the various villages.
