RUTANA, 6th September (ABP) – There is a rise in the prices of basic necessities in the province of Rutana, a check on the site by ABP has revealed on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, during a visit to the central market of Rutana, in the capital of the province.
Indeed, a kilo of rice costs 3700 BIF while it was 3450 BIF two months ago. Beans cost 2900 BIF while it was at 2600 BIF; maize sells at 1800 BIF per kilo while for a long time the price was 1600 BIF. A one-and-a-half-litre bottle of imported sunflower that used to cost 15000 now costs 20000 BIF. The price of bread has increased by 1000 BIF.
Nevertheless, the price of palm oil has remained stable during this period. A bottle of one and a half liters sells for 13000 BIF and this price has not changed. The same is true for potatoes. The kilo has cost 2200 BIF for two months.
Speaking about the reasons for that price increase, some sellers said that stocks have started to run out for farmers who put their overproduction on the market, but also for some traders who had made stocks for late sale.
Another reason given is that transporting those products is becoming more and more expensive. A rice seller reported that transporting a bag of that product in the hood of a Probox type car from the commune of Giharo (rice production area) to the capital of the province costs her between eighty and one hundred thousand Burundian francs.
As for the baker, he told us that the price of the ingredients used to make bread, especially flour and oil, continues to rise, not to mention transport, which is becoming more and more expensive, due to the lack of fuel.
