BUJUMBURA, October 1st (ABP) – The NGO Caritas Burundi in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment, Agriculture and Livestock organized on Saturday, September 28, 2024, the plastic waste collection work in the Mirango quarter of the Ntahangwa District in Bujumbura city, under the theme “Zero waste in life”, a check on the site by ABP has revealed.
According to the permanent secretary at the ministry in charge of the environment, Emmanuel Ndorimana, environmental protection is the work of all Burundians. Thus, he invited them to support the “Zero waste in Burundi” movement which consists of solving the problem of waste that pollutes the environment and public spaces.
Ndoricimpa also invited the administrative officials of the Bujumbura city to raise awareness among the entire population on the hygiene conditions in their surroundings, not to throw plastic waste in the gutters or on the side of the road. This waste is not biodegradable and accumulates in the environment in a critical way, he noted. This pollution has a negative impact on the soil, and poisons groundwater and can have serious repercussions on health, he explained.
For his part, the Secretary General of the NGO Caritas Burundi, Father Cubwa Bernard indicated that this campaign also aims at the protection of creation and this is stipulated in an encyclical letter from Pope Francis, dated May 24, 2015 “Laudato Si” (Praise be to you Lord). According to him, this waste collection campaign began on September 1 and will end on October 4, 2024 with the objective of cleaning up the country’s cities.
This plastic waste will be handed over to companies that transform it into essential products such as paving stones used in construction and others.
Cubwa called on all stakeholders to redouble their efforts to combat the effects of climate change because they are undermining the country’s development
