October 16th (AMSP/CGTN) – – Morocco and China signed a memorandum of understanding in September, establishing a three-year cooperation program focused on water resources. A few weeks later, the cooperation project kicked off between the two countries.
The agreement between Morocco and China sets the stage for strategic bilateral collaboration from 2025 to 2027. It also includes a policy for managing extreme weather phenomena, which have become more frequent in the North African country.
“This agreement will strengthen our bilateral cooperation with a precise agenda over the next three years. It addresses the issue of water mobilization in a conventional and unconventional manner. It also includes the fight against drought and floods,” said Nizar Baraka, Moroccan Minister of Water and Equipment.
China’s Vice-Minister of Water Resources, Zhu Chengqing, highlighted the importance of the Water Management Partnership. “We will work together and learn from our experiences on water resources. We will target the challenges we’ve both faced recently. Our two countries will also cooperate on water management,” she said.
Environmental experts note that there is growing concern over water scarcity and climate change within Morocco, but also throughout the world. “Morocco aims to reinforce its water infrastructure amid water scarcity and the effects of climate change on water resources. Morocco is working closely with international partners in this field. Morocco is also drawing on the experience of China because it has well developed water management technologies,” environmental expert Mustafa Aisset pointed out.
Moroccan and Chinese experts will work together on improving water supply systems in rural areas, where access to clean drinking water remains a challenge. As part of the initiative, the two nations will also explore innovative solutions to ensure sustainable water use in agriculture.
