RUTANA, September 27th (ABP) – 1,652 households that have suffered the effects of climate change in Rutana province will benefit from electronic money aid from the Burundian government through the project to support productive social safety nets and jobs known as Merankabandi, Michel Nyabenda, coordinator of the said project, said on Wednesday, September 25, 2024 during a workshop to present the activities that this project will implement.
The households that will benefit from the Merankabandi project aid are based in all the villages of Musongati and Gitanga districts, those of Shembe village in Giharo district of Rutana province, he clarified.
During his introductory speech, the assistant to the Minister of National Solidarity, Social Affairs, Human Rights and Gender, Pontien Hatungimana reported that a population, estimated at 200 thousand, the majority of whom are women, suffered the consequences of the El Niño phenomenon during the year 2023-2024; hence the ministry in charge of solidarity has chosen to help the victims of this phenomenon. He indicated that in addition to the victims of climate change, the government also supports other groups of people, namely vulnerable families and the elderly, among others, always through the Merankabandi project.
The assistant to the minister in charge of solidarity, as well as the coordinator of the aforementioned project, invited the staff of that project and the administration to ensure that the aid can reach the target beneficiaries of the project. They called on them to support them so that the money they will get can support them in their self-development.
