BUJUMBURA, May 28 (ABP) – The President of the Republic of Burundi and current chair of the regional oversight mechanism of the peace, security, and cooperation framework for the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Region Evariste Ndayishimiye, paid a visit to the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Sunday, May 25, 2025.

According to information from the office responsible for communication at the presidency, the visit was part of consultations with his counterpart, the president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, in preparation for the 12th Summit of the Regional Oversight Mechanism of the Peace, Security, and Cooperation Framework for the DRC and the region. This summit is scheduled for May 28, 2025, in Kampala, Uganda, during which the Burundian Head of State will hand over the chairmanship of the mechanism that he has led with distinction.

The visit was an opportunity to discuss major achievements since May 6, 2023, when President Ndayishimiye assumed the presidency of the mechanism, succeeding Félix Antoine Tshisekedi.

It also provided a moment to review the ongoing challenges to stabilizing peace in the region, particularly in the DRC, and to assess progress toward the objectives of the framework agreement. These discussions will be reflected in the final report that the Burundian President will present at the upcoming summit.

It is worth recalling that the peace, security, and cooperation framework for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the region was signed by 13 Great Lakes countries: the DRC, South Africa, Angola, Burundi, the Central African Republic, the Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Zambia.

It was also signed by four guarantor institutions: the United Nations, the African Union, the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
