MUGERE, April 22 (ABP) – The ministry of finance, budget and digital economy, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), opened on Tuesday a session to validate the national artificial intelligence (AI) strategy.
The permanent secretary at the ministry, Francine Inarukundo, specified the objective. It is to harmonize visions. It is also to validate the country’s strategic orientations in terms of AI.
According to her, this strategy should improve governance. It should also enhance the quality of public services. It also aims to boost productivity.
Inarukundo indicated that AI can support youth employment. It can also contribute to sustainable development. She stressed one point. The use of AI must remain ethical. It must respect data sovereignty.
The acting resident representative of UNDP, Jonas Mfouatie, referred to an important step. According to him, this strategy is part of Burundi’s digital transformation. He highlighted the opportunities. AI can improve public services. It can stimulate innovation. It can also support economic growth.

Mfouatie, however, issued a warning. He mentioned risks. These include biases, violations of privacy, and inequalities linked to limited access to skills and infrastructure.
The speakers called for an inclusive approach. They emphasized the participation of public, private, and academic stakeholders.
UNDP reaffirmed its commitment. The organization intends to support Burundi in the implementation of this strategy.
