MUKAZA, April 16 (ABP) – The director of the Bujumbura health province, Dr. Elie Nduwimana, accompanied by the head of the public health department in the Mu kaza district, Dr. Armel Nzeyimana, as well as volunteers from the Burundi Red Cross, launched on Sunday, April 12, 2026, in Bujumbura, a disinfection operation targeting schools in the health district of Mukaza commune, a check on site by ABP has revealed.

In his address, Dr. Nduwimana indicated that this activity was carried out on the eve of the third-term school reopening in order to curb the spread of cholera in certain basic schools in the said commune.

He explained that the operation involves not only disinfecting schools but also cleaning drainage channels along roads, including sanitation work and spraying products intended to eliminate insects that transmit cholera.

He specified that this initiative aims to eliminate the germs responsible for cholera, which is still affecting the city of Bujumbura, and to ensure a healthy environment for students before the resumption of classes for the third term of the 2025-2026 school year.

Regarding the institutions that benefited from this disinfection operation, he mentioned ECOFO Jabe I and II, Lycée Jabe, the Official Orphanage of Bujumbura, ECOFO CEPBU, Lycée Municipal of Buyenzi, as well as COMIBU Buyenzi. He added that the operation also extended to certain public places, notably Basin I and II in Buyenzi, the drainage channels of 1st Avenue Bwiza, as well as FOREAMI.

According to Dr. Nduwimana, this preventive action in favor of schoolchildren will continue in public spaces, during the school reopening period, as well as in other schools of the Bujumbura health province, in order to sustainably strengthen the fight against the spread of cholera. It will also help ensure a clean and healthy environment for students and for the entire population.
