The President of the Republic received in audience the EU Special Representative for the Great Lakes Region

GITEGA, November 8th (ABP) – The President of the Republic of Burundi, Evariste Ndayishimiye received in audience on Tuesday November 05, 2024, at the presidential palace in Gitega (Political Capital), the European Union (EU) special representative in the Great Lakes region Johan Borgstam, a check on the site by ABP has revealed.

Their discussions focused on the security situation in the region, especially in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), as well as the Luanda and Nairobi processes.

Borgstam told the press that the aim of his visit was to gain a deeper understanding of Burundi’s priorities and its overview of the situation in eastern DRC, so as to be able to convey an accurate picture of the situation to EU bodies.

During talks with Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye, he underlined the importance of regional collaboration in tackling the security and political challenges affecting eastern DRC. With that in mind, Borgstam praised the key role played by Burundi in the search for peaceful solutions and in efforts to stabilize that region, which is plagued by long-lasting conflicts.

The spokesperson for the President of the Republic, Rosine Guilene Gatoni, reported that the two dignitaries had also exchanged views on the development of the region, and in particular the development of Burundi. According to Gatoni, Borgstam congratulated President Ndayishimiye on the development steps that Burundi has already taken in implementing Vision 2040-2060.

Borgstam also pointed out that that is an inescapable sign that peace and security reign in the country. He also congratulated him on all the services that Burundi, through the East African Community and cooperation with the DRC, is providing to help maintain peace and security in that country.

Gatoni pointed out that the President took the opportunity to call on the Great Lakes region and international organizations to join forces to help maintain peace and security in the DRC by combating all armed groups based there.
