GITEGA, March 20th (ABP) – The Governor of Gitega Province (the political capital and center of Burundi), Venant Manirambona, urges farmers not to sell off their maize harvests at the ridiculously low prices offered by some traders, whereas ANAGESSA will soon be purchasing the harvest.
In a press release, Gitega Provincial Governor Venant Manirambona stated that in many rural areas, farmers who find themselves in a vulnerable situation are often forced to sell their produce at prices well below their fair value for each family’s need. He indicated that traders then take advantage of these vulnerabilities to buy their harvests at minimal prices, even though the farmers have spent too much money on planting, monitoring, and harvesting. “It is essential to protect farmers’ interests by avoiding selling at a loss or at excessively low prices,” he added.
Based on this, and recognizing the importance of defending the value of local agricultural products, he urged producers to maintain a fair price for their crops, as, he noted, this practice can harm their purchasing power and hinder their ability to invest in future harvests.
Governor Manirambona reminded farmers that ANAGESSA will soon purchase their crops at a fairer price. He also emphasized the importance of supporting the State’s efforts to improve inventory management and avoid economic losses for producers. “Farmers must remain vigilant and view this initiative as an opportunity to preserve the value of their efforts and ensure greater economic security for their families and the nation,” he concluded.
