MUKAZA, Feb 24 (ABP) – More than 1,790 medicines are now included on the new list of the Public Service Mutual Fund (MFP), compared to 1,178 that were on the previous list.

These remarks were made by the Director General of the MFP, Sylvie Nzeyimana, during a press briefing held on Friday, February 20, 2026, to make public this updated list of medicines covered by the MFP for the benefit of its members. This took place on the sidelines of a meeting she held with representatives of certain hospitals and partner pharmacies of the MFP responsible for supplying medicines to members, as well as delegates from the ministry of public health.

She specified that every two years, the MFP reviews the list of reimbursable medicines as well as their prices. In this regard, Ms. Nzeyimana explained that although two years had not yet passed since the last review, it was deemed necessary to develop a new list due to numerous complaints from members. Some claimed they were not receiving prescribed medicines in partner pharmacies, while others indicated that they had to pay high amounts when the medicines were available, she noted.

In response to these concerns, she explained, the MFP worked with prescribing doctors from various hospitals, managers of partner pharmacies, as well as representatives of the supervising ministry, to develop a new list of covered medicines.

She emphasized that the main difference between the old and the new list lies in the increase in the number of medicines covered, rising from 1,178 to 1,798 medicines, that is, 620 additional medicines.

Regarding prices, she indicated that given the general rise in costs on the market, including those of medicines, the MFP made a slight adjustment to the reimbursed amounts. This measure aims to allow partner pharmacies to make a profit in accordance with regulations, while guaranteeing members access to medicines at an affordable cost, she added.

During the meeting, she further stated, the stakeholders agreed to sign new agreements in order to improve collaboration and ensure better service to members, compared to the difficulties observed in the past.

Ms. Nzeyimana expressed confidence that the commitments made would lead to a notable improvement in access to medicines. The partners committed to strictly respect the prices listed in the new schedule and to consult regularly to resolve any potential difficulties, in the interest of MFP members.

With regard to medical prescriptions, she stressed the need to organize in-depth discussions with prescribing doctors, in order to encourage them to carefully consult the new list of medicines covered by the MFP.

She also called on the managers of partner pharmacies to take ownership of these new lists in order to clearly identify the covered medicines, which, according to her, will prevent members from being denied medicines that are nevertheless available on the list.

It should be noted that the new list of medicines will come into effect on March 1 of this year.
