MUKAZA, April 10 (A  BP) – The minister of communication and media, Gabby Bugaga, visited the newspaper Ndongozi y’Uburundi and then Radio Voix d’Espoir on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, for a working visit.

First, at the Ndongozi newspaper, he was received by Abbé Jean Noël Ntirandekura. The latter heads this media outlet founded in 1940. He explained that the newspaper plays an important role. It disseminates religious messages, but also relays information of public interest. According to him, the newspaper maintains good relations with the ministry and the national council of communication.

However, it faces several difficulties. On site, he mentioned a lack of resources. Journalists work without cameras. In addition, there are not enough computers. The printer is broken and the generator no longer works. As a result, production becomes difficult.

Faced with this situation, Minister Bugaga acknowledged the challenges. He indicated that several Burundian media outlets are experiencing the same reality. However, he reassured that the government is seeking solutions. According to him, the media occupy an important place in civic education.

Next, Bugaga went to Radio Voix d’Espoir. There, he was received by the director of the station, Etienne Ntihemuka, who expressed his satisfaction with the visit. The station has existed for more than 18 years. It broadcasts on 94.3 FM in Bujumbura and on 107.8 FM in countryside. It has 16 journalists. It also has two studios and a website.

But there again, difficulties persist. Ntihemuka spoke about financial burdens. The radio must pay fees to ARCT and RTNB. However, these payments are made in foreign currency. Consequently, the station must obtain this currency, sometimes on the parallel market, which increases costs.

At the end of the visit, Bugaga spoke to the press. He explained that these field visits are normal and aim to strengthen contact with media outlets. He also praised the work of the Ndongozi newspaper. According to him, this media has contributed to raising public awareness, particularly on hygiene and sanitation. Likewise, he encouraged Radio Voix d’Espoir, recognizing its role in social mobilization and development.

Regarding the fees in foreign currency, Minister Bugaga qualified his remarks. He indicated that discussions are ongoing. However, certain international obligations require these payments.

Finally, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment. The objective remains the same: to support the media and move toward the vision of an emerging Burundi by 2040 and a developed country by 2060.
