MUYINGA, October 8 (ABP) – Kiryama communal high school is facing a shortage of students for the 2025-2026 school year, a situation that worries the school administration. This situation is mainly due to the absence of diversified sections. It only has one section considered outdated, said the director of Kiryama communal high school, Juvent Niyongabo, during a check by ABP on Thursday, October 2, 2025.

Mr. Niyongabo, who has taught at this school for six years and has been the director since last school year, states that the problem of low student enrollment is recurrent. He points out that the school only offers the Languages section, with a total of 43 students for the current school year, spread over three levels: Languages 1, Languages 2, and Languages 3.

As an example, Mr. Niyongabo specified that 19 students had initially been assigned to this school, but only six actually enrolled this year. The others refused the assignment, citing the outdated Languages section, he added.

The school fees collected from these students are insufficient to cover the school’s operating needs. Additionally, the school, not having a basic cycle, does not benefit from operating subsidies granted by the state, he deplored, noting that he sometimes has to use his own resources to meet the school’s needs.

Another major difficulty raised by the director of Kiryama high school is the arable land belonging to the school, which is largely made up of rocks, making farming difficult. Despite the efforts of the staff who invest in fieldwork to support the school, the harvests are insufficient, he deplored.

Mr. Niyongabo also said that this issue has been reported several times, without any concrete solution being provided, even after the appointment of new administrative officials.

He calls on educational and administrative authorities as well as NGOs for support, notably through the establishment of new sections at this school, which risks closing its doors.

Note that this institution was founded in 2009 thanks to the efforts of the local population.
