KARUSI, March 24 (ABP) – The minister of justice, human rights and gender, Alfred Ahingejeje, carried out a field visit on Thursday, March 19, 2026, to the communes of Karusi and Shombo in Gitega province, to engage with the population on the functioning of the judicial system and to listen to the grievances of litigants.

On this occasion, he stated that the Burundian justice system functions normally and constitutes a pillar of the country’s development. According to him, the priority is to guarantee fair justice, accessible to all citizens, without discrimination.

In this regard, he recalled that a law recently promulgated by the Head of State, Evariste Ndayishimiye, provides for the construction of 451 local courts throughout all zones of the country, as well as 42 High Courts (TGI) in all communes. For him, this initiative aims to bring judicial services closer to the population and reduce travel to the ministry of justice located in Bujumbura.

The minister Ahingejeje also emphasized the importance of proximity between judicial authorities and citizens. He indicated that field visits make it possible to better understand the concerns of the population and to provide appropriate responses, in collaboration with various administrative bodies.

However, Alfred Ahingejeje deplored the misconduct observed among certain citizens who refuse to accept court decisions. He thus called on law enforcement to monitor and sanction individuals who deceive citizens by promising to handle their judicial cases illegally.

Finally, the minister reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring respect for the rights of every citizen and access to fair justice. He also announced his intention to engage in discussions with SOPEBU in order to find a solution to the fuel shortage affecting certain courts, with a view to improving their functioning.
