MUKAZA, January 5th (ABP) – In continuation of the sports campaign that she initiated, the First Lady of the country, Angeline Ndayishimiye joined, on Saturday January 3, 2026, the inhabitants of the Mukaza commune in Bujumbura province for a sports walk.
The latter started at the Siguvyaye River, in the Mutanga Sud neighbourhood, passing through Sororezo to end at Independence Square in Kiriri. This is where the physical exercise sessions took place, including jogging and stretching.
This activity benefited from the participation of two distinguished guests including a South African national as well as the Ethiopian Nardos Berhanu, Executive Secretary of the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OPDAD).
In her speech, First Lady Angeline Ndayishimiye stressed that sport transcends borders and strengthens ties, not only amid Burundians, but among all African people. She cited the presence of these visitors as an example, affirming that sport unites populations around the same spirit and shared joy.
On the sidelines of the sporting activity, Mrs. Ndayishimiye instructed the Executive Secretary of OPDAD to convey a message at the next meeting of the organization. She wants her African counterparts to become more involved in promoting sport. She recalled that physical activity is an essential lever for preventing diseases and maintaining a healthy life.
Taking the floor, Mrs. Nardos Berhanu commended the First Lady’s commitment to the sports sector, hailing in particular this intergenerational approach which brings together young people and the elderly. She described these actions as impressive and beneficial for public health, while suggesting that other African First Ladies should take inspiration from them to mobilize their respective populations.
Note that this campaign will continue on Sunday in the urban commune of Ntahangwa, towards “Ku Matafari”, where a massage session was planned.
