RUYIGI, September 3rd (ABP) – The governor of the province of Ruyigi, Mrs. Emerencienne Tabu, disagrees and warns against the phenomenon of bush fires that has been reviving and taking on worrying appearances since the beginning of August, in the various communes of that province and especially on the Mpungwe range.

The provincial governor deplores the people’s negligence in protecting the environment and recalls that such behaviours only amplify the effects of climate change that are already a reality in that province.

It also indicates that the harmful consequences of that neglect will sooner or later have to happen to that people.

That phenomenon began to manifest itself in June and gradually amplified until August.

From the beginning of this current week, those bushfires have been observed in the Mpungwe mountain range where several fires have appeared in several places.

According to concordant sources from the Burundian Office for the Protection of the Environment, an area of more than 20 hectares has already been devastated by bushfires throughout the province’s mountains and other forest areas.

Governor Tabu deplores the state of affairs, and recalls that the administration has always held awareness sessions since the year 2020 until today.

Indeed, she emphasized, the population has always received lessons related to the benefits of protecting the environment and biodiversity in general, especially in those times when the effects of climate change have become a reality, through several communication channels.

She urged everyone to redouble their efforts to combat that phenomenon, adding that the perpetrators would be punished in accordance with the law.
