MUKAZA, Oct 7 (ABP) – The National Olympic Committee (CNO) of Burundi held an information and exchange workshop with sports journalists in Bujumbura on Thursday, October 2, 2025. The meeting aimed at discussing preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, evaluate Burundi’s participation in the Paris 2024 Games, and define future prospects for sports development in the country.
During the workshop, Lydia Nsekera, chairperson of the CNO and minister of sports, presented the eligibility criteria for the Olympic Solidarity programs for the 2025-2028 Olympiad. She highlighted that selected athletes must rank among the top ten in Africa in their discipline. Athletes who meet the minimum requirements or have qualifying points for continental championships may also receive support through the continental-level athlete assistance program, she added.
Regarding major competitions such as the African Championships, World Championships, and the Olympic Games, Mrs. Nsekera specified that the age of beneficiaries must comply with the requirements of the respective International Federation.
Additionally, she noted that new criteria now require athletes to agree to undergo anti-doping controls and medical examinations, a decision made in response to issues encountered by some Burundian athletes in previous Olympic Games.
To achieve Burundi’s 2040-2060 vision, Minister Nsekera stressed that three conditions are essential: good governance, the establishment of adequate infrastructure, and regular participation in international competitions.
