GITEGA, April 7 (ABP) – The Burundian senate analyzed and adopted, on Friday, April 3, 2026, in its hemicycle in Gitega (political capital and center of Burundi), a bill ai med at reforming the social security system in order to improve the living conditions of retirees.

Members of the senate of Burundi approved a text amending certain provisions of law number 1/09 of March 14, 2022 relating to workers’ social security. The session was chaired by the president of the senate, Gervais Ndirakobuca.

The Burundian government was represented by the minister in charge of labor and social security, Lieutenant-General Gabriel Nizigama, who presented the reasons for this reform. He indicated that the said bill aims to strengthen the social protection of workers, particularly after their retirement.

It provides, among other things, for an increase in pensions, with the objective of bringing them closer to the last salary received before retirement.

The senators welcomed a significant step forward in terms of social justice, considering that this measure will help provide more dignified living conditions for retirees.

Through this adoption, the Senate of Burundi reaffirmed its commitment to greater social equity in Burundi.
