KIGOMA, March 23 (ABP) – The joint security committees of the communes of Makamba and Nyanza in Burunga province, led by the governor’s advisor in charge of legal and political affairs, Mrs. Annonciate Ndayikunda, carried out a two-day mission to Kigoma starting on March 18, 2026, to meet with their counterparts from the districts of Buhigwe and Kigoma in the Kigoma region. Among other outcomes, they agreed to work in synergy to protect the environment and combat human activities in the buffer zone of the border (no man’s land).

According to the participants in the meeting, environmental protection in this area is necessary to restore the habitat of chimpanzees that move through this locality from Gombe National Park to the Bururi Nature Reserve. They also agreed to raise awareness among the population about international standards governing the use of the buffer zone along national borders. Fishermen are also required to respect the designated zone on Lake Tanganyika and avoid using prohibited equipment and fishing nets

The participants further agreed to combat prohibited alcoholic beverages and narcotics in both countries.

The Ujirani Mwema meetings between the border regions of Burundi and Tanzania have been organized since 2004.
