NGOZI, Feb. 21 (ABP) – The general directorate of penitentiary affairs of Burundi organized, on Thursday, February 19, 2026, a meeting for prison directors, officials in charge of rehabilitation centers for minors in conflict with the law (CRMCL), prison medical staff, as well as the security corps.
The purpose of this meeting was to evaluate the activities carried out over the past six months throughout the penitentiary system. It also aimed to set a new momentum to improve service delivery, particularly with regard to staff management, security monitoring, and the health of detainees.
The Director General of penitentiary affairs, Pierre Claver Miburo, indicated that they agreed to redouble their efforts by working with transparency, helping staff access what they need, and enabling detainees to access their rights without compensation, while improving services in compliance with human rights.
They also addressed the issue of proper management of prison revenues, particularly the management of production and the modalities for its distribution, in accordance with directives from the hierarchy which stipulate that all State revenues must pass through a common State account, to be used according to the needs of State structures and their planning.
He noted that the prison population remains high, with an occupancy rate above 100%. He also welcomed the fact that the State has already initiated a prison decongestion program, which will allow for a significant improvement in the living conditions of the prison population.
